I’m going to spend a few days down in Wellington and decided to drive there. Because I was tired of the shit Japanese cars you can get for really cheap rentals here I jumped upon this deal. It’s 2014 Focus with the 2.0l petrol, 170 hp, but a 6-speed auto... (at least it’s not a CVT). First impression so far : the gearbox is neither bad nor good. It’s just average. I would have preferred a manual, though the Ford Powershift makes a decent job. Also needs more torque! It makes 20 more hp than my parents Passat, and weighs probably 500kg less, but it has way less kick. Long live torquey Diesels!!

I hired a Mk2 Focus 2.0d with the powershift a few years ago and it was OK, no more than that. The car felt heavy and the gearbox felt like a sluggish conventional automatic. It averaged I think 6.6 l/100km which wasn’t as good as I expected.
I take it NZ has cheap fuel? You couldn’t give away a 2.0 petrol Focus here.

I’ve been averaging around 6.9l/100km so far. A litre of premium costs around 2NZD. Diesel is cheaper (like 70 cents less) but you have to pay road taxes on top of it.
